5 Reasons Why I Started My Waterproof Bag Brand (and Why You’ll Love It Too)

Hey, I’m Matteo, founder of Expedition / Units. A few years ago, I got stuck in the mud in the middle of Mongolia — literally.

My gear was soaked, my camera almost died, and I realized how useless most “waterproof” bags really are.

That day, I made a promise to myself: If I ever made it out of that mess, I’d design the kind of bag I wish I had — tough, stylish, truly waterproof, and built for real adventure.

Here’s what I discovered (and why I launched my own brand):

01

Real adventure needs real protection

Most “waterproof” bags fail when things get rough.

When you’re out in unpredictable weather, you don’t need marketing fluff — you need gear you can trust.

Our bags are built to survive storms, mud, and river crossings — because they were born in them. (There’s a photo of me knee-deep in Mongolian mud to prove it.)

02

Not just water-resistant. 100% waterproof.

Forget coatings and fancy words. We use high-frequency welded seams, the same tech used to seal inflatable boats.

That means no stitches, no leaks, no compromises. Your gear stays dry — whether you’re kayaking, commuting, or just caught in a downpour.

03

Designed without toxic materials

I was shocked to learn most outdoor brands still use PVC, one of the most polluting plastics out there.

So we went a different route: We use recycled fabrics made from plastic bottles and coat them with eco-friendly TPU, which is safer for you and the planet.

It’s proof that sustainability doesn’t have to mean sacrificing performance.

04

Built for adventure, styled for everyday life

I didn’t want another rugged bag that looks like camping gear.

I wanted something that could move between the mountains and the city — minimalist, functional, and timeless.

That’s why every Expedition Units bag is versatile by design — equally at home on a trail or in a coworking space.

05

Fair pricing without the hype

I saw two worlds: cheap bags on Amazon that fall apart in months… and overpriced “luxury” brands charging 300€+ for the same materials. We decided to do things differently.

We sell directly to you, cutting out middlemen, so you get premium quality without the insane markup.

Great bag, wonderful company!

This bag is super durable and is a great asset on long hikes, caving adventures, you name it. It also looks really cool and tactical. I love it! I’ve dragged it over sharp rocks, mud, etc and it has held up well with no punctures. Matteo and his team are warm and accommodating and prompt to resolve any issues. I can’t thank them enough for their support. If you’re an avid adventurer, who needs a dependable bag, get this one!

Well designed backpack

This backpack is well designed especially for the price. I would sooner have a dry bag type of closure system for the top. The velcro is annoying and difficult to line up when you fill the bag. Otherwise it is well designed, it holds my Microsoft surface securely on the inside and all of my workout gear when I'm riding my bike.

PROJECT 8020 WATERPROOF BACKPACK

This was my second purchase from this company. I needed a backpack that was waterproof for cycle commuting, large enough for my laptop, lever arch file and notebook. I also wanted it to be comfortable and adjustable. What i got was a bag that was even more comfortable than I anticipated, entirely waterproof and well made. It also looks cool. I have had a number of compliments. I thought it was expensive, but if it meets my criteria (and it exceeds it), then I am happy to pay for it. I would certainly buy again, and I had really done a great deal of research of similar products. The company also genuinely cares that you are happy with the product, too many larger and more established companies don't show this care. I am very happy to recommend.

Project 8020

I bought this backpack assuming it is 100% submersible and water proof however this doesnt seem to be the case. A man on YouTube demonstrates that water does come into the main compartment and also the smaller pocket. Although I haven't done the test myself, seeing that video put me off but I saw it once Id already placed my order. I think remote projects need to ensure this bag is 100% waterproof by making a video of its own. Otherwise it's unfair on the customer who purchased it for its waterproof (not water resistant) qualities
